Trip Details
DAY 01:
Leaving Huaraz at 9am, we will arrive at the first campsite at 3pm after a lunch stop in Chiquian. There is no hiking on the first day. Once at the camp, you will have time to relax and enjoy the view of Rondoy mountain and the valley, where there are often spectacular sunsets.
DAY 02:
The second day will start early to begin the 2.5 hour hike up to the first pass at 4,700m. We will then descend c.400m before climbing to a second pass at 4,650m. The campsite at Carhuacocha (4,280m) will be reached at around 4.30pm.
DAY 03:
The third day will also start early to begin the uphill hike to the next pass, at 4,810m. On this day you will visit the famous Tres Lagunas viewpoint. In total there will be approximately 8 hours of hiking to reach the next campsite, Huayhuash, at 4,350m.
DAY 04:
Another early morning start to allow us to trek up to the Trapecio pass, at 5,041m. There is an optional extension (around 40 min) to reach the glacier, before descending past 5 beautiful lakes to reach the campsite Cuyoc at 4,400m. Approximately 6-7 hours of hiking to reach the campsite. There is also an optional extension to hike 2 hours from the campsite to San Antonio pass at 5,100m.
DAY 05:
Today will be one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the Huayhuash trek, the Santa Rosa pass. Here Suila Grande can be seen, the mountain made famous by the book and movie Touching the Void. 19km of walking which takes approximately 9 hours with breaks and lunch. The campsite is in the village of Huayllapa at 3,487m.
DAY 06:
On the final day you will wake up at 1am, say goodbye to the trekking team and take a car from Huayllapa to Barranca on the coast. From Barranca it is possible to catch a bus back to Huaraz or to continue to Lima, also by bus. The cost of the onwards travel from Barranca is not included in the price of the trek.
